My mom's a Math lecturer at a teacher's college so she asked me to cook up a flyer the students who have decided to do over some CXC students. Knowing me, I couldn't say no; she's ma mom! How could I say no, I just looked on it as another challenge. So as i got in late last night I just made it happen! LOL!, I make it sound easy huh?

Anyhow, another post for 2012, just to have an idea of how much graphic design work I do.

So, this may be some what interesting or even surprising to many to see a post from me after all of these months. Okay, fine, its almost a year! Sigh, sad eeh? Yep! Anyhow, my intention this time around is to document ALL of the work I produce for this year and beyond. From Graphic Design, (which you may see most of), Printmaking, Photography and any quirky doodles I do from time to time. So, lemmi just start off this process by making my first post for 2012. Oh crap! Happy New Year and all the other good stuff!

Today we pay tribute to our Heroes and sole Heroine whose lives remain a very significant part of our history. We will do so through cultural dances, songs prayers and other national activities.

These heroes dared to be different when they demonstrated those unselfish acts of bravery for our freedom. These are good by themselves but as a people what are we doing to preserve these heroic acts? I think we could begin by showing our appreciation, and respect for our National Symbols; namely, our flag, our anthem and our pledge which are outcomes from those heroic acts.

Regrettably, our people, both young and old are still unsure of the words of the National Anthem and it is even more sad that some refuse to stand or do not stand correctly when the anthem is being played or sung.

Come on; let's continue to cultivate that sense of pride and dignity for these National symbols.

I have been working on this commissioned print for a while now. I was contacted by a client who saw the final print in the edition for the "Perpetrated Inside" which was sold to a popular radio personality on FAME95 FM. The prospective client was head over heels when she saw the print and quickly formulated an idea for a gift for a friend. "I have to get something like this..." she said, as her eyes glowed and stared at the print. She quickly shot me the idea, and prayed for the best. I'm here working on the piece as I type now. I pray all goes well! As usual comments are more than welcome. Thank you.

A great day is is huh?? :) Well, it s for me. I decided to look back on some of my old art work and that I had done in my final year at the Edna Manley College. To my surprise I had stumbled up on on one og my most successful lithographic prints. The photos below is the process of the printing directly from the stone.

It honestly was a tedious process, but when I saw the result, man, was I excited to print the edition! Check out the photos, and as usual comments are more than welcome!

Over the last three months I have been working on the conceptualizing and designing of the Radio Jamaica Limited 2009-2010 Annual Report. The Kingston On The Edge Urban Art Festival is a summer shot of adrenaline for anybody open to new sights, sounds and flavours. This is especially true for younger artists like us, avid KOTE goers seeking to deepen our KOTE experience by becoming more active participants. We, Monique Lofters, Warren Buckle, Kori Solomon and Karl Fagan are young artists new to the local art scene and eager to become more involved in it. As such we are proposing to host an exhibition during KOTE June 2010 entitled 4sight.

The exhibition would showcase a selection of painting and photography works by four recent graduates of the Edna Manley College, all of whom have completed their tenure with a BFA. As a quartet our work plays upon chosen aspects of daily life and human nature. Through photography Warren Buckle investigates intimacy, in attempt to present a defining visuals of the experience. In his own words, “The images are interpretations of the personal and private nature of intimacy. Observations of the forms they take; the silent conversations of bodies sculpted by light and captured by digital lens.”

Digital photography is also the medium chosen by Kori Solomon to capture ‘the simplicity of life’, as he poetically puts it,“We would see, and yet are blind to, the things we interact with everyday, never noticing their true beauty. These macro photographs seek to carry the viewer on a journey into a familiar, yet unexplored world, one of small details, clarity and simplicity.” Employing her talent as a painter, Monique Lofters explores the repressed and subverted elements of human nature, creating colourful interpretations of closeted desires as food for thought.

Last of the four, Karl Fagan taps into his sensibility as a graphic designer to present mixed media pieces of “Deadly Virtues”, insightful and playfully cynical works that explores modern Jamaican values. As a whole the exhibition aims to juxtapose similar mediums by artists with distinct approaches. It embraces diversity while being tethered by related subject matter and a shared train of thought.

The Jamaica Pegasus Gallery, operated by Curator Vera Inez, and located at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, has agreed to host the proposed exhibition. The Gallery regularly provides such opportunities and is host to exhibitions held on a tri-monthly basis, which give budding and established artists an opportunity to share their works with the public. The exhibit, entitled 4sight, would primarily occupy the front area the gallery. The Jamaica Pegasus Gallery is located in the heart of new Kinston but generally is frequented by guests of the hotel and patrons, KOTE is a great way to introduce the wider public to another place in Kingston to view and enjoy local art.

In keeping with the spirit of KOTE 4sight offers a chance for viewers to experience something other than what they’ve had before, an opportunity to be provoked, comforted, amused, or maybe something deeper, by the work of four young Jamaican artists, each with something to say about life, lust and simple joys.

Okay, so fine! i proved myself wrong! I pulled through and fought to make it work. I challenged myself to have three completed pieces for the JCDC Visual Arts Competition and Exhibition 2010; and I did! I continued with the same concept of how society has affected the youth in Jamaica. This time I've made the prints more intimate. I allowed the viewer to be apart of the art work. Allowing them to be one with it.

Anyhow, I'm praying that at least one of my three are chosen for the exhibit as well as make it for the competition. Psh! I'm praying I make it to the award ceremony! Well we'll see huh?! These are the not the final pieces, but I chose to show you a preview of how they look... Comments are much welcomed...

As the days draw neigh, so does the pressure seem to heighten... The (Jamaica Cultural Development Commission) J.C.D.C. National exhibition deadline date comes closer. I have thought of having 3 entries this year... Hmm? I wonder if I'm capable of getting the emerging artist of the year again? LOL, that would be something huh?

Its May 9th I've just come to some liking of one of the digital prints i've been working on for quite some while now... Getting this art work (completed) and to the printers by Monday morning is another story. I pray this will work in my favour!

Anyhow, here's a preview of the print.

'Straight Up' by Neil Williams (giclée print).

An oasis of a nook in a bustling commercial centre happens to be one of the places to catch the work of young artistic talent these days. Eye-catching pieces by Katrina Coombs, Kori Solomon, Elpedio Robinson, Neil Williams and Leopold Barnes are currently on display at Bookophilia in Liguanea, St Andrew.

Kori Solomon's 'Bleaching' is a heavily textured look at physical transformation which focuses on the detrimental effects of what has become a cultural phenomenon. The darkly hued piece sits beside 'Dermatillomania', another giclée print by the artist exploring similar themes.

Organic fabric

Katrina Coombs has a wall to herself, covered with organic fabric and wire shapes that give the passage the intimate air of a small cave or womb. Titles like 'Lady Blue' and 'Earth Dancer' explain the airy movement captured by this body of work. Neil Williams' photos start out with interesting perspectives of Jamaica then, through digital manipulation, take the scene to an almost surreal place where colour gains poignancy and emotion. 'Palisadoes Blues - Crashing Waves' turns the sunset into a visual poem.

With this assortment of giclées and original paintings from Robinson and Barnes, Bookophilia sounds more like an art gallery than a bookstore. But, rest assured, there is a wide and interesting selection for those who actually come to get reading material.

Bookophilia

Bookophilia is a six-month-old bookstore that looks like a café and feels like a boutique. Owner Andrea Dempster said the idea is to promote creativity in different forms. She believes the venue allows for the exposure of artists to people who might not make it to a gallery. It also enhances the experience for visitors to a store that boasts a snack bar and kiddie corner as well as serene pockets of space for reading.

80's Tea Break is the first in the series of the "Staying Connected" series. This is 1 print or a seven print edition. So yea, its a limited edition. The "Staying Connected" series is intended to remind people that whether or not they had a great past, its the past that makes who we are as an individual. Although this isnt my typical approach to my digital prints I most definitely enjoyed the process and pushed many of my boundaries. From slicing, to stitching, and incorporated text, I enjoyed it all! 80's Tea Break is intended for an annual competition at the Revolution Gallery named "Tea Glorious Tea" so hopefully I do get the opportunity to be apart of it...

The pictures below are a few images from the Fiction Night Club, "The Exhibitionist" exhibition held on June 24, 2009. Featured artists were myself (Kori Solomon), Phillip Clayton and Marcel Messam. Also keeping the night alive was a poetic performance by Sajjoya Alcott and dance performances by Morekeia Isaccs and Shady Squad. Over all it was a brilliant well spent night. The DJ Collin Hinds rocked the club too! Amazing stuff!

Monotype: A form of printmaking in which the artist draws or paints on some material, such as glass, and then prints the image onto paper, usually with a press. The remaining pigment can then be reworked, but the subsequent print will not be an exact version of the previous print. Monotypes may be unique prints or variations on a theme.

When the monotype was completed, scanned and re-worked the image in Photoshop, where I enhanced the colours, added a little detail and cleaned it up. The final print is a digital print on heavy textured watercolour paper. (Open edition, so feel free to contact me and buy a print!)

Sad, but true, in Jamaica, there are many teenagers who find themselves partaking in sexual activities. The fact that this has happened and has started at this age group, in some way or another defines who they are. This isnt to say that these children cant change, but the exposure that one faces at that age is absolutely unbelievable. The study and art work isn't intended to attack young adults and teenagers, or anyone as a matter of fact; its solely to trying to inform our parents and guardians of what is happening with their children...

Over a great deal of months, Adrian McPherson, Administrator for Sense Jamaica, has been working thoroughly to organize a user-friendly Jamaican online encyclopedia to ease the minds of 'us' the internet users to source vital information on Jamaica; its happenings, music, people and almost anything one would want to know.

Sense Jamaica is about user-powered contribution—to develop a concise and comprehensive body of knowledge, specifically on Jamaicans and other aspects within the Jamaican realm.

Currently we are seeking persons to be part of the development of a web based community. This community will be expected to be the driving force that collaboratively assist in the writing and editing of articles and other encyclopedic content which covers existing knowledge.

Head study I did a while back. It started out as a graphite drawing, using my '2b' and 'h' and mechanical pencils and quickly evolved into this digital image... I was working on a new series (which I don't think I should disclose right now because it is still in the planning stage) and decided to take a break to have a little fun. The end result... I found myself doing a great amount of scribbles starting almost in about June or July 2008. I stumbled up on the idea from one of my previous works posted "Dermatilliomania Series." They suddenly evolved in something very illustrative and fun.. Illustrations I find myself doing quite often too! Let me know what you think of them.

Work at the Wijicoon Gallery

As i stepped into the vicinity of the Wijicoon Art Gallery, I quickly noticed the signage which i do believe is a work of art in itself. Great painting on wood.

At the top right hand corner you will notice the print "Bulimia Nervosa " along with other art works from fellow Jamaican artists. The trip tic to the left of the photograph is one of the pieces in the exhibition that i really hold on to. I'm really liking the concept and layout of the work.

"Perpetrated Inside," (print above ceramics) is about Jamaican children how are abused and molested at a young age, and only because they believe their only escape is bottling the incident inside instead of confronting it, they tend to tear themselves down physically and emotionally.

Societies Influences on Self Harm

As human beings, I believe our identity is composed of a layering of stories, those we retell about ourselves and those we overtime ascribe importance and value to.

This series of work is focused on the unorthodox methods children in the Jamaican inner cities between the ages twelve and seventeen perform to themselves as a means of finding comfort. This study was narrowed down to the middle and lower class children of Jamaica. I have found that this has been an issue that has been lingering for quite a while in the Jamaican society and has been overlooked by parents and guardians of these children.

This study is extremely significant, not only because it may be seen as a social commentary to parents, guardians or even teachers of these children, but also because it gives the wider public an idea of what children have been exposed to at a young age.

First "Real" Body of Work

As a fine artist my goal is to bring important issues that we as Jamaicans (and God's willing to the world) face on a day-to-day basis. In the last body of work I focused on how society influences children to perform harm to themselves... The study was a very interesting one because I've learnt so much as I went along creating the works... The work is mostly mixed media prints, where I focused on the Printmaking techniques to come to the final product.
